Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt

29.1.2020 – 19.30h

For more than six years, the SCHIRN has served as a forum for national and international filmmakers and video artists. Under the heading Double Feature, the latter present a work from their own oeuvre, followed by their favorite film. Already, films and videos by more than 50 guests have been shown. Double Feature is designed as a platform for various trends and forms of expression in film and video production which, with the dawn of digitization if not before, is now considered an art form in its own right. On the last Wednesday of every month and in conversation with the curators Katharina Dohm, Matthias Ulrich and guest curators, the invited artists provide extensive insight into their creative work, especially their interest in film.

ANNIKA KAHRS

Sound as a communications tool forms a central theme in the work of Annika Kahrs. Her performances, films, photo series and installations are often based on musical productions conceived as playful experimental setups. Music as a verbal form of expression functions at the same time as an outlet and a metaphor in all of this. At the Schirn, the artist will be showing her film the lord loves changes, it’s one of his greatest delusions (2018, 16 Min.), in which she adapts two pieces by American composer Julius Eastman.

Comissariat: Joana Hurtado Matheu

De Vishal, Haarlem, The Netherlands

11.1 – 9.2.2020

Turner Contemporary, Kent

7.2 – 3.5.2020

Opening 6.2.2020, 18 – 20h, Speeches 18.30

The exhibition is curated by Hannah Collins and Paul Goodwin with Turner Contemporary.

From 7 February 2020, Turner Contemporary will showcase the work of artists and makers from the Alabama and surrounding states in We Will Walk – Art and Resistance in the American South.

We Will Walk – Art and Resistance in the American South is the first exhibition of its kind in the UK and reveals a little-known history shaped by the Civil Rights period in the 1950s and 60s.

It will bring together sculptural assemblages, paintings and quilts by more than 20 African American artists from Alabama and surrounding states. The artists represented in the exhibition lived through the Civil Rights struggle and its aftermath, often in conditions of poverty.  This art is characterised by the remaking and reuse of materials through necessity, custom, culture and innovation as well as a vital connection to place and nature. The exhibition also features Civil Rights music and documentary photographs that reveal the links between the art and its context.

Some works are in direct dialogue with this era of protest, while others evidence the longstanding impact of segregation and racial terror. Produced from the mid-20th century to the present, many of the artworks will be coming to Europe for the first time. In an era of worldwide protest on the streets, We Will Walk addresses issues of race, class and resistance through a diverse range of works developed outside of the mainstream.

Much of the work in We Will Walk draws on the tradition of the ‘Yard Show’, temporary outdoor environments made from salvaged materials. This includes the root sculptures of Bessie Harvey and Emmer Sewell’s iconic sculpture created outside her home in Marion County. The exhibition will see a series of quilts from the isolated hamlet of Gee’s Bend (known today as Boykin) in Alabama go on display in the UK for the first time. These world-famous quilts have a distinctive style, and are often made from recycling old clothing such as blue jeans. The exhibition also features guitars by Freeman Vines, including one made from the wood of an old hanging tree.  These artists turned impossible circumstances into innovative artworks.

Villa delle Rose, MAMbo, Bologna
18.1 – 22.3.2020
