exposure:the fact of experiencing something or being affected by it because of being in a particular situation or place (Cambridge Dictionary)

Exposures is a series of online exhibitions that aims to reflect on topics related to the current context, and around the general idea of ‘The body and the other’.

Exposures #03The hands

The third proposal revolves around the hand, the part of the human body most linked to the artistic creation along with the eyes and which at the same time helps us to communicate and relate, just like the word.

It brings together works by Erick Beltrán, Cabello/Carceller, Victoria Civera, Hannah Collins, Enzo Cucchi, Chema Madoz, Enrique Martínez Celaya, Muntadas, Perejaume, Marcel Rubio Juliana and Julião Sarmento.

Our hands are taking an unusual role in the last months due to their role in the transmission of viruses. Touching things, touching our faces, touching other hands has become dangerous, hands are now forced to cover themselves with gloves, to wash constantly, not to touch, not even to say hello.

But we have seen how its presence has been a constant in many artistic works, from prehistoric art to the present day, due to its formal and symbolic variety.

The non-verbal language of gestures reveals the relationship between hand and mind. In the works we show, the hand gestures express different moods, feelings, attitudes or emotions from fear or sorrow to sensuality or complicity. Sometimes, as happens for example in Julião Sarmento’s works, its representation alludes to the totality of the human body.

Hand gestures also refer to social conventions, thus becoming a representation of the human condition in close relationship with culture and expression. As evidenced in some of Muntadas‘ works, this rhetorical figure can define ambition, agreement, imposition, authority or power.

This exhibition will be on view until September 30th.

Spring has been marked by a radical transformation of our ways of moving, relating and exchanging. Suddenly everything has changed. Our perception of everyday things and also of the most relevant things has been questioned. What seemed essential to us becomes not essential. We have realized the precariousness of life, we have known the importance of solidarity, of family, of our loved ones, of our environment. Nature and the environment have also taken a leading role that they did not have before.

Facing this, we have dared to ask the artists of the gallery to participate in this exhibition that we now present, with works which they have carried out during this time of social isolation. They are diverse answers to the same question, they have in common the use of paper as a medium, common for some –like Victoria Civera or Perejaume– and unprecedented for others –like Hannah Collins or Annika Kahrs–.

The making of these works has been able to become an escape route, a tool to continue working despite the difficulties and, at the same time, they allow the spectator to enter the intimacy of the studios and the heads of their creators. They are, in most cases, works made at home, with house’s tools, testimonies of a unique and, we hope, unrepeatable moment.

‘Think about the size of the universe, then brush your teeth and go to bed’ takes the title of a work by the artist Annika Kahrs. Starting with humor, it invites us to reflect on the balance between micro and macro levels and on the search for meaning and identity within the unfathomable universe of which we are a part, reflections that become fundamental in the current context.

The result of this exhibition has been a series of diverse works. In some cases, we see that the themes that worried the artists, before the pandemic, have maintained their leading role or, even in others, they show fragments of their work process and are linked to future projects.

In other cases, we find proposals that speak directly of the current moment: reflections on personal relationships, the political situation, messages from the media or vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

Finally, we would also find a third group of works that focus on observing the closest environment and nature.

A Storm in a Teacup & Sideshow of a sideshow, 2012

exposure:the fact of experiencing something or being affected by it because of being in a particular situation or place (Cambridge Dictionary)

Exposures is a series of online exhibitions that aims to reflect on topics related to the current context, and around the general idea of ‘The body and the other’.

Exposures #02. The word

The second proposal brings together conceptual practices around the word and the language, basic tools in our relationship with the world and with others.

The works of Erick Beltrán, Joan Brossa, Pauline Bastard, Muntadas, Javier Peñafiel, Perejaume, Teresa Solar and Anna Dot (guest artist) propose texts, phrases, messages, statements, which become resources for the analysis of reality, characterized by their critical and transforming character of the art system and society.

The works presented reflect the relationship between word and image and use various linguistic strategies. In the case of Teresa Solar‘s work, she plays with the aesthetics of phonetics and language learning posters. In other cases, language is used from a sound dimension -as in the work of Perejaume-, a sign –Javier Peñafiel– or poetic –Joan Brossa.

In the 2018 Muntadas work, the mechanisms of communication, language and the problematic relationship between the production of knowledge and economic power are analyzed. Also in the case of Erick Beltrán, through language, he dissects the world to classify it, categorize it, differentiate each of its elements in order to try to understand it.

In a more narrative line, Pauline Bastard‘s work starts from objects found casually that allow her to entrust strangers with the writing of creative fictions.

Lastly, we wanted to introduce an action carried out by Anna Dot at the Fundació Brossa in 2019, evidently for her connection with Joan Brossa, but also for her poetic reflection on the construction of words.

This exhibition will be on view until 10 of June.

Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, Beijing

18.8–16.9.2018

Opening, 18.8.2018 – 16.30h

Lecture, 18.8.2018 – 15h

Curator: Esteban Andueza & Du Xiyun

The Beijing location of Three Shadows Photography Art Centre is proud to present the Antoni Muntadas exhibition Asian Protocols: China, Japan and South Korea, a multidisciplinary research art project investigating the ways that private and public protocols affect society and people’s lives.

Starting from the premise of Muntadas as an outside observer planted in three countries, he develops his own research exploring questions about the idea of “protocol” as applied to culture, politics, education, society, public and private space, economy, the religion, etc. As an artist, his analysis takes the form of videos, installations, documentary films, archives, and others – an array of disciplines that Muntadas has been exploring for the last decades.

Asian Protocols, then, is a visual research work focused on the cultural background of the three countries, dissecting the similarities and differences between the collective and the individual in all three. It also attempts to breakdown stereotypes about the three countries, focusing on three megacities: Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo.

The first installment of the project was presented at the Total Museum in Seoul in 2014. In 2016 the project was shown at 3331 Arts Chiyoda in Tokyo. The third and final exhibition will be held at The Three Shadows Art Centre in Beijing in August 2018.

Since its beginning, the project has been constantly growing, enriching itself with research carried out in each specific site, offering new contents and formats. In the Beijing exhibition the audience will find a total of 10 well-differentiated sections presented through a wide spectrum of artistic formats that, far from trying to show conclusive ideas, pretend that the spectator himself is the one who elaborates and questions his own analysis and conclusions.

The exhibition, curated by Lorenzo Bruni, reflects on the prerogatives that could today express the concept of the “ideal” landscape from both a nature and intercultural interaction perspective.

The purpose of the project is to consider landscapes as territories to share in experiencing its discovery, as well as in the reinstatement of the concept of community. The artists invited to intervene in the Geological Museum, thus entering into a dialogue with the collection and its particular museum display, are Maurizio Nannucci, Antoni Muntadas and Marinus Boezem, internationally renowned artists that have been active since the 1960s and among the first to explore the dialogue between nature, culture and language, as well as three mid-career as Salvatore Arancio, Domenico Mangano & Marieke van Rooy and Paolo Parisi. These artists of Sicilian origin that long ago chose to live and work off the island analyse memory and their comeback in Sicilia to create site specific works. The journey and the dynamics of dialogue are adopted and evoked by the artists to create the various reflections connected to the theme of the discourse between the id, our surroundings, the sense of belonging and the manner of conveying know-how in the digital age. To underline the need for increasing awareness about both the physical and mental context within which the observer interacts with the global and intangible reality of information, three additional artists were invited – Stefania Galegati Shines, David Medalla and Gianni Melotti – to create specific projects tied to communicating the overall project and to suggest an innovative perspective of the role of the museum in this era of instant digital archives.

muntadas-contexto

Galeria Joan Prats presents the exhibition Edicions II by Muntadas, which gathers a selection of serial works the artist has developed since 2003 up to the present day in different formats: publications, prints, videos, objects, installations and other graphic materials. This exhibition completes the work started in the exhibition Edicions, made at Galeria Joan Prats in 2003.

«The first time Muntadas talked to me about the exhibition Edicions II at the Galeria Joan Prats, he referred to it as an “exhibition of deltas”. I asked him to elaborate: “my projects are one, they are units. But these units diversify into huge quantities of postcards, there could be up to 100.000 postcards, and could even include 17 metal plaques distributed throughout the city in the form of signage, or a web page. So, the project finally appears as the sum of three collections of remains; that is of deltas” (…)

Editions allowed Muntadas to achieve a more porous and plural circulation by its multiplication and intervention capacities across diverse media and in different time frames. While his projects usually consist in one video, one installation, or one urban intervention, his publications are rarely made up of a single unique element (…)

A truly genuine notion of project has also emerged throughout Muntadas’ career. The artist tackles the project, on the one hand, as the logic behind a series of procedures, based on the repetition of processes and strategies and on the other, the project defines itself following the logic of a work in progress, generating moments of aperture. In this way, the notion of project, as Muntadas states, has allowed him to depart from a type of intuitive and immediate practice while helping him to structure flexible environments, open to unpredictability, developing platforms to work in the long run (…)

The editorial work and the publications is where Muntadas has experimented more precociously and with more intensity than in any other medium the collaborative methods that have ended up impregnating the whole of his work. Here is where one finds the deployment of strategies that catalyse translation no longer, as just a metaphor, so much as in particular a process of bidirectional exchange.»

Fragments of Oriol Fontdevila’s text Piscine Obliviousness. Amphibious editions, from the exhibition catalogue.

Muntadas, born in Barcelona and living in New York since 1971, was a pioneer of video and installation in the mid-seventies, and continued working with photography, video, installation, audio, and urban interventions. Iterations of his iconic projects, such as Between the Frames: The Forum (1983-1993), The Board Room (1985), and the on-going series On Translation (1995- …) and The Construction of Fear (2008- …) – have been exhibited in institutions and galleries of the USA, Latin America, Europe and the Mid-West. Muntadas participated in the Documenta’s 1977 and 1997 editions, the Whitney Biennial of 1991, the Bienal de São Paulo of 1983, the Bienal de La Habana of 2000, the Taipei Biennal of 2002, the Gwangju Biennale of 2004, the Instanbul Biennal of 2011, and the Paris’ La Triennale of 2012. In 2005, he represented Spain in the Venice Biennale, where he created an integral project about the architectonical evolution of the Biennale throughout its history. His works have been included in exhibitions at MACBA, Barcelona; Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Mexico City; Weserburg Museum, Bremen; Espacio Fundación Telefónica, Buenos Aires; Württembergischer Kunstverein, Stuttgart; and Estação Pinacoteca, São Paulo. Since 2011 he has been working on the project Asian Protocols, presented to the public for the first time at Total Museum of Seoul (2014), and for the second time at 3331 Arts Chiyoda of Tokyo (2016). The next step of the project will be its development in China.

CGAC Santiago de Compostela

17.02 – 17.06.2018

Curated by Blanca de la Torre, Imbalance aims to provoke reflections on the potential of art as a useful path for reviewing our conceptions regarding some present-day environmental problems. The exhibition’s approach implies the understanding that our conceptions of natural fact and reality have to be re-examined, on the basis that our current situation of “ecocide” results — either directly or indirectly— from the way in which we have instrumentalized our natural environment.

Muntadas

In Girum Revisited” by Muntadas
Screening
Saturday June 17 – 6 pm
Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin

Carte blanche to Antoni Muntadas

Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin invited Antoni Muntadas for a carte blanche session, including notably the international première of “In Girum Revisited”, his latest video piece.

Antoni Muntadas was born in 1942 in Barcelona. After studying architecture and engineering in Barcelona, Muntadas dedicated himself to art, and ever since 1971,he has focused specifically on video production. He settled in the U.S., where he was granted a fellowship, then became a professor at the Center of Advanced Visual Studies (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He now lives in New York and is a professor of the practice in MIT’s Department of Architecture, heading its Program in Art, Culture and Technology (ACT). He is also a professor at the Instituto Universitario de Arquitectura del Veneto in Venice.

Antoni Muntadas was an early pioneer of video and installation art in the mid-seventies, and he has continued to work with photography, video, installation art, audio recording, and urban art. Over four decades, Muntadas has been developing these projects, which critically reflect on key issues in the configuration of contemporary experience. His aim is to detect and decode the control and power mechanisms through which hegemonic ways of seeing are built, and explore the decisive role played by the mass media in this process. In his works, which always reflect a clear creative process and often make a direct appeal to viewer participation, Muntadas uses an array of media, languages and discursive strategies that encompass interventions in public space, video and photography, the publication of printed material, the use of Internet and new digital tools, multimedia installations, and the organisation of multidisciplinary, collaborative research projects.

Muntadas has taught and directed seminars at diverse institutions throughout Europe and the United States, including the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, the Fine Arts Schools of Bordeaux and Grenoble, the University of California in San Diego, the San Francisco Art Institute, Cooper Union, the University of São Paulo, and the University of Buenos Aires. He has also served as a resident artist and consulting advisor for various research and education centres including the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, the Banff Centre in Alberta, Arteleku in San Sebastian, The National Studio for Contemporary Arts Le Fresnoy, and the University of Western Sydney. His work has been exhibited in numerous museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Berkeley Art Museum, the Montreal Contemporary Art Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires, the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona. His work has been included in international events and venues such the 9th and 10th editions of Documenta Kassel (1977, 1997), the Whitney Biennial of American Art (1991), the 51st Venice Biennial (2005), and others in São Paulo, Lyon, Taipei, Gwangju, and Havana. His solo exhibitions have also appeared at the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart, the Centro de las Artes in Sevilla and the Centre d’art contemporain in Thiers. He presented an installation at the Inter-Society of Electronic Arts in San José, California in 2006, the Telefónica Foundation Space, the Recoleta Cultural Center, and the Spanish Cultural Center in Buenos Aires in in 2007, and the Cervantes Institute in Paris in 2008. In 2009, he carried out an art intervention at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion. In Montréal,his work was shown at the SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art and at the Cinemathéque Quebécoise. Supported by the program Lives And Works in Istanbul, he exhibited at the Istanbul Modern Museum in 2010. More recently, there was a Muntadas retrospective at the Reine Sofia Museum, showcasing his”Entre/Between”, which ran from 2011 to 2012. In 2013, his work was exhibited inside Pinacoteca Station in Sao Paulo. It has also been shown at Galeria Michella Rizzo in Venice and at Galería Moisés Pérez de Albéniz in Madrid. His exhibit”About Academia”, previously installed in 2011 at The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, traveled to the Audain Gallery in Vancouver in early 2013.

Muntadas is the recipient of numerous prizes and grants from institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and Arts Electronica in Linz. Muntadas Loop

Friday 26 May 2017, 11:15 —12.:30

Loop, Barcelona

In the words of Niels van Tomme

What have we learned from Muntadas? After having had the honour to experience a body of work that has grown expansively throughout a more than four decades long career devoted to detecting and decoding the mechanisms of control and power through which hegemonic ways of perception are constructed, what is it that makes us return time and time again to the politically apt works of Muntadas?

There is an old-age idiom that goes “seeing is believing”, but if there is one thing to be absorbed from Muntadas’ insightful practice, it is the fact that seeing can never be straightforwardly aligned with believing. For Muntadas the media-saturated ways in which we experience the world are always already ideologically, politically and socially coded. In order to see properly we need a proper “translation”, a moment that allows the passive stance of seeing to transform into the more active act of knowing, which is the becoming aware of the very mechanisms of mediation itself. These are the tools Muntadas’ multidimensional media practice provides. “Warning: Perception Requires Involvement” goes the artist’s well-known 1999 slogan, thereby highlighting the multifaceted relationships between seeing, transcribing, perceiving and knowing, which are key to understanding his work. We cannot think the world without acting within, and becoming actively part of that world. And so Muntadas’ practice, besides offering a constructive way in which to perceive the media fabric around us, primarily makes us involved and active participants within the reality that surrounds us.

Muntadas’ early video works shift impressively from merely documentation of ‘actions’ towards a more complex investigation of the medium’s intrinsic political and ideological framings. Even though the work often looks scientifically detached, the emphasis lies not in following the protocols of documentary media production, but on forging new ways of seeing. It is a seeing that makes us aware of the intricate ways in which media filter and reshape the events we watch, or, conversely, how we are shaped by the manifold mediations that persistently take place right before our eyes. Once you see this, there is no way to unsee it.

Muntadas

Arts Santa Mònica, Barcelona

02-28.05.2017
